The quiet, well-behaved students sat politely and listened to tributes Tuesday morning from the Orange City Council. “Y’all have done something that’s a magnificent feat,” Councilmember Bill Mello said to the teenagers.

The council honored the West Orange-Stark Mustangs football team and staff for winning a second straight state championship. Mayor Jimmy Sims read a proclamation saying the group “exemplifies exceptional sportsmanship, talent and hardworking athletes.”

Head Coach and Athletic Director Cornell Thompson said several of the players are honor students.

The city is sponsoring a “Back 2 Back” parade and celebration for the team on Saturday, January 28, at the downtown riverwalk and pavilion from 4 to 8 p.m. The 5 p.m. parade will follow a similar route as Mardi Gras parades.

In other business, the council agreed to accept a $35,300 grant from the Stark Foundation to demolish seven dilapidated houses in the Navy Park addition.

The council approved on final reading a zone change from Commercial to Commercial 2 to allow Modica Brothers Tires on 16th Street to expand westward along Lutcher Drive.

Also, the council agreed to declare a 1993 Quality pumper truck from the Orange Fire Department as surplus. The city has a new pumper on order and it is expected to be delivered in two or three months. The old one will be put on the Rene Bates internet auction site.

During the closing comments, Councilmember Pat Pullen asked for prayers for the West Orange-Stark High student council members who were in a rollover collision Saturday morning. Pullen said his granddaughter was on the vehicle and suffered a concussion. Another student with a broken shoulder bone will have to have surgery, he said.

The school district said the school vehicle was being driven by the student council sponsor and they were traveling to high school student council retreat in Houston. The vehicle hit a patch of ice when entering an Interstate 10 on-ramp near Highway 62.
