Bridge City will be applying for a $275,000 grant from the Texas Department of Agriculture. The City Council approved a resolution Tuesday that authorizes the city to apply for the Texas Community Development Block Grant.
City Manager Jerry Jones said Bridge City will use the grant money to rehabilitate sewer lines for low to moderate income residents. The city will prequalify applicants for the work to be done on their residences. Jones anticipates the city prequalifying a lot of people, but will still have people that are qualified that do not get their new sewer line. “This will be a first step, and we’ll probably apply for the same thing again next year, but this will get quite a few of them seals with new lines in their yards,” Jones concluded.
The City Council also approved an ordinance which authorizes Bridge City to participate in regulatory proceeding involving Entergy Texas Incorporated during 2017. Several other cities have adopted similar ordinances.
Jones informed the council that letters were mailed out to citizens Tuesday concerning the trihalomethanes (THM) in the water. This was anticipated because of the average ratings for the last few months, but Jones adds that the current THM levels are in the acceptable range in the 50 and 60s.
Installation of filters for the water wells should start the last part of January. Jones predicts the filters should be operational by the first week of February. Bridge City after that will test the system to see how well it is eliminating the brown water for the city.
The water tank on FM 408 is operational now with the installation of an altitude valve. The city manager states that the city will have to re-case about 450 feet of the Romero well. He indicates this is more cost effective than drilling a new well. It was hoped the trouble spots could be repaired individually, but Jones said the casing is too thin to do that.
