The City of Pinehurst began working Monday to alleviate drainage problems in the city which caused severe street flooding on June 29 when the area was inundated with over six inches of rain. City Administrator Robbie Hood said city crews under Street Director John Toney are dredging ditches as the first step to improve drainage in Pinehurst.
After the torrential rain let up Hood and Toney inspected Pinehurst’s streets to identify where the problem areas were located. The Camelot addition and 35th Street were determined to be two of the worst areas. Dredging the ditches on 35th Street was started Monday to help the water flow more properly. Hood advised, “There are several other areas within our city that we’re going to try to take care of ourselves. That way when we do visit with the Corps of Engineers we can say this is what we’ve done within our city limits and this is ultimately the problem that we see.”
Hood is waiting to hear from a project manager with the Army Corps of Engineers to talk about a wetlands area off Park Avenue in the Camelot addition which the Orange County Drainage District has been forbidden to dredge. At the last meeting of the Pinehurst City Council, Hood informed the members that dredging the other streets could be frivolous if the drainage on Park Avenue by Camelot is not done.
Toney estimated the dredging of the ditches on 35th Street between Pheasant Street and Park Avenue will take about a week to complete weather permitting. He stated crews are working cautiously not to cut underground phone lines, cable lines, or disturb gas pipe lines. 35th Street is being closed to through traffic while crews are working on the dredging.
