CASA Case Going To Grand Jury

Orange police have wrapped-up a months-long investigation of theft from the non-profit group CASA, or Court-Appointed Special Advocates.

Detective Captain Robert Enmon said the group provided police with audit information. Detectives sent the case information to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, where lawyers will review the information. The office will then present the case to a grand jury for an indictment or send it back to police for more evidence.

Board members of the Sabine Neches Region CASA group went to the Orange Police Department in late January after discovering more than $10,000 in unauthorized credit card charges to the non-profit’s accounts. The executive director, who had been at the job nearly three years, resigned at the time.

CASA trains adult volunteers to be with abused or abandoned children as they go through the court system. The Sabine Neches Region, based in Orange, also serves Newton, Jasper, Tyler, Hardin and Sabine counties.

The group has continued its operations even with the theft investigation.
