A 10-year-old Vidor boy was severely injured Wednesday morning after he took his mother’s pickup truck and crashed it while leading police on a chase that reached 85 mph.

Vidor Police Chief Rod Carroll said the boy was taken by medical helicopter to Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston.

He said the boy took the truck after becoming upset about a disciplinary issue at home.

The chief said several citizen calls came to the police department about 7:30 a.m. concerning a truck driving recklessly on South Main Street. Patrol officers went to intercept the vehicle and saw it run a red light on Main Street at Highway 90.

Police got near the truck in the 600 block of South Main and turned on emergency lights. Instead of stopping, the truck sped away. Officers followed the Dodge truck on South Main (FM 105) and the chase reached 85 mph. The truck went off the roadway and crashed south of the Old Spanish Trail.

Chief Carroll said officers saw the occupant was a child and began to give first aid. The boy had not used a seatbelt.

Acadian Ambulance was called and first responders with the Orange County Emergency Services District 1 extricated the boy from the crashed truck. The child was taken to a landing zone for Acadian Air One helicopter.

While officers were helping the boy, his mother called the Orange County Sheriff’s Office to report that her son had taken the truck, according to Chief Carroll. He said the incident is still under investigation.
