Pinehurst Protecting Citizens Against Contractors

It has been over a month and a half since Harvey smacked Orange County.  Many citizens are preparing to get their homes and businesses repaired with new walls, flooring, and maybe even some modifications to the original structure.

That means people will probably be looking for a reputable contractor to do the work.  Pinehurst Code Enforcement Officer Harry Vine informs that most cities have guidelines to ensure contractors are qualified to perform the job of rebuilding your home or business.  In Pinehurst contractors must have a $5,000 bond and must be insured with a minimum liability of $100,000.  Vine stated, “I will stop work on any projects they have until those specifications have been met.”

Signs can be seen all over the county from contractors, many of them not from this area, who are seeking your business to repair your home.  Vine provides some advice when you are ready to select a contractor.  Find out how long the contractor has been in business, do they have enough financial responsibility to be able to handle multiple jobs, and how much experience do they have repairing flood damage specifically.  Ask a lot of questions and get a lot of references.  Vine advised, “Go with what your gut tells you, usually people’s first impressions are the best.”

Vine added that although first impressions are good it is still advisable to get more than one bid, at least two or three, before deciding on the contractor to do the work.  Talk to neighbors and friends which is a great way to get information on the contractors in this area.
