Investigators believe the person whose remains were found behind MacArthur Shopping Center three weeks ago was murdered. “We think it’s a homicide but we haven’t confirmed the ID,” said Orange County Sheriff’s Captain Cliff Hargrave.
He said the identity will not be released until it is confirmed through tests that haven’t been completed. The victim’s family knows the remains likely belong to the missing person.
Investigators have been interviewing “people of interest” in the case. “It’s a slow process,” he said.
In October, Captain Hargrave said a person gave law officers information that led them to discover the remains. The site was a wooded area behind the old MacArthur Shopping Center, which has now been demolished. The remains are believed to belong to a person who had been missing for less than a year.
The sheriff’s office is investigating the case along with the Pinehurst Police Department and Texas Rangers. They are working with a forensic anthropologist.
