Commissioners Looking For New Legal Rep

The Commissioners Court may need to find new legal representation in about two months.  Assistant County Attorney Doug Manning informed his boss County Attorney John Kimbrough that he is retiring at the beginning of 2018.

Manning has been the legal counsel for the Commissioners Court and all the other elected officials in the county for almost two decades.  The Commissioners Court held a workshop on Monday to discuss with Kimbrough the options available to replace Manning when he retires.

County Judge Brint Carlton does not see the Commissioners favoring a particular direction at this time in finding a replacement legal counsel for the Court.  The options include Kimbrough hiring another attorney to do all of Manning’s current duties, or the Commissioners Court having an attorney to serve exclusively under them.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office has provided an attorney for the Commissioners Court for more than twenty years.  Before Kimbrough was elected County Attorney in 1993 the Commissioners Court hired attorneys on as needed basis and paid them an hourly fee which proved to be rather expensive.  After Kimbrough took office, an attorney in the County Attorney’s office was assigned as special counsel for the Commissioners Court.
