The City of Bridge City is in good financial condition entering a new quarter of the fiscal year. City Manager Jerry Jones gave a quarterly budget report to the City Council which met Tuesday evening. Jones said revenues are exceeding expenses to this point of the year. “It’ll balance out, hopefully, we’ll keep a strong reserve and at the end of the year we’ll be back where we need to be,” Jones summarized.
The City Council approved four ordinances Tuesday dealing with city codes in Bridge City. Revisions to the ordinances had been discussed at a workshop in February.
The first ordinance set 50 feet as the minimum distance from a property line for residents to keep any form of livestock. The second ordinance defined what barndominium and beach house residences are and prohibited the construction of such structures unless a variance is first obtained through the Board of Adjustments in Bridge City.
A third ordinance makes it unlawful for persons to park or leave a motor vehicle, watercraft, recreational vehicle, or trailer in the front yard of any residence unless it is on an improved area which must be comprised of concrete, brick, asphalt, gravel, or stone. The final ordinance prohibits the use of portable buildings for commercial purposes unless a variance is obtained through the Board of Adjustments.
The City Council approved a resolution allowing the Bridge City Police Department to apply for a Portable Radio Interoperability Grant. The grant requires no matching funds from the city.
Two pieces of property on Granger were approved to have zoning changes from single family residential to multi-family residential. The owner Milton Crooks wants to use the properties at 200 and 195 Granger to build two duplexes.
Lucy Fields and Carl Harbert both expressed interest in serving on the Collective Bargaining Committee. They were appointed Tuesday to represent the city in the 2018-2019 Bridge City Police Association contract negotiations.
As has been done by other cities and the county, Bridge City authorized a waiver to allow the Orange County Mosquito Control District to fly at low altitudes over the city to spray for mosquitoes this year. This is an annual request by the mosquito district to allow them to do aerial spraying for the abatement of mosquitoes.
