The Pinehurst City Council appointed a new assistant city attorney Tuesday.  Doug Manning was the unanimous choice to serve in the position just created by the City of Pinehurst.

Manning retired in January after 20 years with the Orange County District Attorney’s office and now works for the Orange County Drainage District as a purchasing agent.  Manning explained he accepted the position as assistant city attorney for Pinehurst to remain active as an attorney in the community.  “I’ll only be acting under the instruction and supervision of the city attorney at his request, so I’m happy to serve the city,” Manning commented.  He will be working pro bono, or without pay in the position.

The City Council cancelled the May 5 municipal election in Pinehurst since there are no contested races.  Mayor Pete Runnels and council members John Zerko and Cynthia Adams will retain their positions with the city.  The May meeting of the City Council was moved to Tuesday, May 15, to abide by state election laws so the three candidates can be sworn in at that meeting.

City Administrator Robbie Hood’s recommendations that Waxman and Associates be the project grant administrator and Schaumburg and Polk the engineering firm to handle any post Harvey projects covered by grant funds were approved by the City Council.  Hood said Pinehurst is seeking grants from multiple federal and state agencies.

During the meeting Code Enforcement Officer Harry Vine informed the City Council that a new Burger King restaurant will be opening in Pinehurst.  Vine indicated the Burger King will be located at 2805 MacArthur Drive and should open in three to six months.
