Longtime Orange County Port Commissioner John W. Young Jr. of Vidor resigned earlier this month. Port Director Gene Bouillion said the board of commissioners will likely appoint a replacement to fill his unexpired four-year term. Young had been re-elected in May.
The Southeast Texas Examiner, a weekly newspaper based in Beaumont, reported Young was being investigated because he had claimed two homestead tax exemptions. One was in Orange County and the other in a Louisiana parish.
Homestead exemptions save homeowners money on their annual property tax payments. Tax laws allow only one piece of property to be claimed as a homestead.
Young had served in the Precinct 4 position on the port board for 16 years continuously. He had previously served more than a decade in the 1980s-1990s.
Bouillion said Precinct 4 in the port district is the Vidor area and the new commissioner must live within the boundaries. He said the board has the option to appoint a replacement and likely will because of the time left on the unexpired term.
