Restaurants and food businesses visited by the Orange County health inspector during the first half of August were cleaner than the ones rated in July. The worse one was an 81 and none scored in the 70s.
Health Inspector James Scales went to 28 food-related businesses during the two weeks. Lucy’s Cafe on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Pinehurst was the only one to score a perfect 100.
The lowest score during the period was the Stop and Shop, 111 Green Avenue in Orange. Scales pulled expired foods and found “heavy mold” in the ice machine. In addition, he found “lots of spider webs.”
The pre-opening inspections with no scores were for the new Burger King on Highway 62 in Orange, the new Taco Bell on Texas Avenue in Bridge City, and Circle K Kiddie Ranch on Highway 62 in Orange, which had been damaged during Tropical Storm Harvey.

Arctic Sno Cones, 2000 Strickland Drive in Pinehurst: 99. Hair restraints were needed.
LaCanina Mexican Grill, 2709 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 84. Water in the walk-in cooler was dripping from the ceiling onto bread and tortillas. Products inside coolers and freezers needed to be covered and dated. Ice scoop was on top of ice. Several dishes that had been cleaned still had old foods on them. Storage shelves needed to be cleaned of old foods. Damaged walls needed to be repaired. Current health inspection report was not posted in front.
Stop and Shop, 111 Green Avenue in Orange: 81. Inspector pulled several expired foods. Heavy mold was inside ice machine. Ice scoop was on top of ice machine. Chemicals were stored improperly. Dates were needed on all products. Paper towels were needed in the employee restroom. Lots of spider webs were found. Drinks were stored on the floor. Floors needed to be cleaned throughout the store. Broken and unused equipment needed to be discareded. Trash and crates were stored outside. Door to the walk-in cooler needed to be repaired. Current health inspection was not posted in front.
Texas Snostorms, 2202 MacArthur Drive in Pinehurst: 94. Hair restraints were needed. Inside of coller and freezer needed to be cleaned of old foods. A black substance was found on ceiling tiles. Snow cone machine needed to be cleaned of black mold. Back door needed to be resealed. No food handler certificates were found. Current food service permit and health inspection report were not posted in front.
HEB Pantry, 2424 16th Street in Orange: 96. Paper towels were needed inside the employee restroom. Gnats were on raw onions in produce department. Current food service permit, certified food manager certificates, and current health inspections report were not posted in front.
CVS, 485 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 98. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Floors inside the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Whataburger, 1905 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 95. Inspector found several gnats. The Vent-a-Hood and storage shelves above the compartment sink needed to be cleaned of old foods. Holes and damaged ceiling tiles needed to be repaired.
Petromart, 4080 Interstate 10 West in Orange: 92. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Paper towels were needed inside the employee restroom. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Light shields were needed throughout store. Equipment and pallets were stored outside next to the building and should be disposed. Current food service permit and health inspection report were not posted in front.
Shiver Shack, 6928 Highway 87 North in Orange: 97. No food handler certificates were found. Floors were sticky and needed to be cleaned. Repairs needed to the employee restroom wall.
Jack in the Box, 1315 North Main Street in Vidor: 90. Products inside coolers and freezers needed to be covered and dated. Water was dripping from the CO2 tank area. Floors and walls needed to be cleaned of old foods and trash. Mold was on air vents inside lobby area. Current food permit was not posted in front.
Bobcat Snowcone Stand, 9908 FM 105 in Orangefield: 96. Hair restraints were needed. Employee was eating a sucker when inspector arrived. Bags of sugar were storled on the floor inside the back storage area. The inside of the reach-in cooler and freezer needed to be cleaned of old foods. Inspector found rusted equipment. Food Service permit was not posted in front.
Gonzales Food, Highway 62 at FM 105 in Orangefield: 92. Three-compartment sink did not have running water with buckets of water carried in to use. Hand-washing station did not have hot water. Cooler was not working. Current healh inspection report was not posted in front.
Pirates Stop, 1883 North Main Street in Vidor: 90. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Rust was inside the ice machine. Lots of live crickets were inside store. Floors inside the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned. Lots of trash and crates were outside the back door and at dumpster area. Drinks were stored on the floor. Current health inspection report was not posted.
Susie’s Concessions, 985 North Main Street in Vidor: 96. Dates were needed on all products inside the coolers and freezers. The outside of equipment, fryers, Vent-a-Hood, floors, and walls needed to be cleaned of grease build-up.
Charlotte’s Shaved Ice, 110 South Main Street in Vidor: 92. Hair restraints are needed. The plumbing at the hand-washing station was backed up. Shop did not have food handler certifications. Stand did not have hot water.
Cardinal Snow Cone Stand, 810 West Roundbunch Road in Bridge City: 92. Plumbing at the two-compartment sink was not connected properly and did not have hot water. Containers of syrup were stored on the ground. The inside of the cooler and freezer needed to be cleaned of old foods. Hand-washing signs were not posted at the hand-washing station. The outside of storage shelves, especially under the snow cone machine, needed to be cleaned.
Sunrise Donuts, 2830 Western Avenue in West Orange: 87. Boudin, sausage and eggs were not at proper temperatures. No record of holding time was made on keeping the boudin, sausage and eggs at room temperature. Dates were needed on products inside the cooler and freezer. Employee was using a laptop on top of the prep table. All employees needed to wear closed-toe shoes. The same pan liner was used multiple times to bake kolaches. Vent-a-Hood, the inside of the oven, floors, and walls throughout shop needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease. Light shields were needed throughout the store. Ceiling tiles were damaged.
Paul’s Seafood Connection, 7226 Highway 12 in Vidor: 94. Store had hot water problems. Hair rrestrints were needed. Employees in kitchen needed closed-toe shoes. Shrimp were defrosing improperly in the three-compartment sink. Vent-a-Hood and floors needed to be cleaned of old grease and dirt. Floors were damaged at the three-compartment sink.
Country Pantry, 1079 Orange Street in Vidor: 90. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Dates were needed on products in coolers including sandwiches. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler and sales floor. Shelves inside milk cooler and under the drink station needed to be cleaned of old food. Five truck ties were next to the dumpster and needed to be properly disposed. Floor tiles were damaged or missing. The current food service permit and health inspection were not posted in front.
Dunkin Donuts-Baskin Robbins, 580 North Main Street in Vidor: 96. An employee drink was improperly stored inside the reach-in cooler. Employee was wearing improper jewelry. Boxes and containers of food were stored on the floor inside the walk-in freezer and storage shelves. The outside of storage containers and shelves needed to be cleaned of old foods. Ceiling tiles were damaged.
Dollar Tree, 2013 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 98. Foods were stored on the floor. Ceiling tiles near front registers were damaged.
7-Eleven, 527 Highway 87 South in Orange: 88. Inspector pulled several expired foods, some dating back to 2017. Ice scoop was on top of ice machine. Chemicals were stored improperly above plastic lids in the back storage room. Drinks were stored on the floor. Floor mats needed to be cleaned of heavy dirt. Rusted ceiling grids needed to be repaired. Current food service permit and current health inspection were not posted in front.
Family Dollar, 1301 North 16th Street in Orange: 89. Inspector pulled several expired foods, some back to 2017. Thermometers were needed inside all reach-in coolers and freezers. Lots of spider webs were throughout store. Drinks were stored on the floor. Shelves inside the milk cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods. Lots of trash was in the parking lot and outside at the dumpster area. Back storage room needed to be cleaned. Holes in wall needed to be repaired. Current health inspection was not posted in front.
