A 55-year-old Newton man has been charged with murder in connection with killing a 43-year-old woman. Jasper County Sheriff Mitchell Newman said Kevin Andrea Byerly gave a statement indicating he killed Candi McKee, according to KJAS in Jasper.
McKee was reported missing Monday morning when she did not show up for work. She lived in the Old Salem Community off Highway 87 north of Deweyville. She had left her house to work at the Family Dollar Store in Buna.
Her burned car was found on a Newton County road in the Call area later that morning.
Officials recovered the body of a woman about 5 p.m. Monday in the Sabine River under the Burr Ferry Bridge between Burkeville and Leesville. An autopsy is being conducted to confirm the identity and determine a cause of death.
KJAS reports Jasper Justice of the Peace Mike Smith arraigned Byerly Tuesday morning and set bond at $1 million.
