OC Restaurant Reports

Mice droppings, spider webs, mold, and gnats were some of the problems food businesses had during health inspections during the first part of April.

Orange County Health Inspector James Scales went to 22 businesses during the period and issued only four perfect scores. The lowest was a 79 to Noah’s Seafood Kitchen in Vidor. The restaurant had several citations, including purging crawfish in the dishwashing sink and defrosting shrimp in a bucket on the floor.

The perfect scores were to Little Pirate Learning Center in Vidor, Caryn’s Bakery on West Roundbunch Road in Bridge City, Dairy Queen on Strickland Drive in Orange, and Brighter Beginnings Child Care in Mauriceville.

Scores and demerits are:

Noah’s Seafood Kitchen, 950 North Main Street in Vidor: 79. Raw shrimp, raw fish filets, raw oysters, and hushpuppies were at improper temperatures. Foods inside coolers needed to be covered. Food was stored improperly in the coolers. The three-compartment dishwashing sink was used to defrost fish and purge crawfish. No one had food handler certification. Employee restroom did not have hot water. Dates were needed on products in coolers. Hair restraints were needed. Wiping cloths were stored on prep table. Foods were stored on the floor. Raw shrimp were draining in a bucket on the floor under the handwashing station. Shrimp and fish were defrosting in warm water. Vent-a-Hood and outside of equipment needed to be cleaned. Current health inspection report was not posted in front.

Freeway Express, 115 East Freeway in Vidor: 81. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Chemicals were stored on top of ice machine. Employee restroom did not have hot water. Plumbing under mop sink was leaking water. Inside of cappuccino machine needed to be cleaned of old foods. Tiles on the countertop were broken or missing. Drinks were stored on the floor. Floors under and behind equipment needed to be cleaned. Current food service permit and health inspectoin report were not posted in front.

Super Stop, 2745 Evangeline Drive in Vidor: 85. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Heavy mold was on the drink dispenser. Rodent baits was stored on top of storage shelves. Mice droppings were inside the storage room. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Handwashing sign was needed at the handwashing station. Light shields were needed.

JJ Wings and Seafood, 2246 MacArthur Drive in Pinehurst: 85. Raw fish and raw shrimp were not at proper temperatures. Raw shrimp was inside the prep sink. No one had food handler certificates. Dates were needed on products in coolers and freezers. Soap and paper towels were needed at handwashing station. Employee was eating inside kitchen. Area around fryers needed to be cleaned. Current health inspection report was not posted in front.

Donut Hole, 6309 West Roundbunch Road in Orangefield: 86. Sausage, boudin, and eggs were not a proper temperatures. No record of time was kept on sausage, boudin, and eggs being kept out at room temperature. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers. Spider webs were throughout store. Employee food and drinks were stored improperly in coolers and freezers. Wiping cloths were stored on prep table. Same pan liner was used multiple times to bake kolaches. Vents at Vent-a-Hood and floors needed to be cleaned.

Casa Ole, 1015 NOrth Main Street in Vidor: 88. Foods inside coolers and freezers needed to be covered and dated. A couple of employees were using bare hands on ready-to-eat foods. Beard restraints needed. Employee food and drinks were stored improperly. Dishwasher racks were stored on the floor around the grill. Floors, especially under and around equipment, needed to be cleaned.

Shipley Donuts, 2913 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 88. Employee was using bare hands to cut walnuts. Dates were needed on products in coolers. Wooden cutting board was used to cut walnuts. Employee food and drinks were stored improperly. Same pan liner was used multiple times to bake kolaches. Vents and entire Vent-a-Hood system needed to be cleaned. Outside of equipment, floors, walls, and air returns needed to be cleaned. Handwashing signs were needed at handwashing stations. Inspector said “lots of cleaning is needed at this location.”

Bridge City Food Mart, 1000 West Roundbunch Road in Bridge City: 89. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelvs. Paper towels were needed at handwashing station. Several gnats were in store. Wiping cloths were stored on top of prep table. Drinks were stored on the floor. Vents at Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned. Floors in back room needed to be cleaned of dirt and trash. Ceiling tiles were missing or damaged. Current health inspection report was not posted in front.

Smart Stop Food Mart, 811 Strickland Drive in Orange: 92. Inpsector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Mold was inside ice machine. Drinks were stored on the floor. Current health inspection report was not posted in front.

Flava-Foods at LSC-O, 410 Green Avenue in Orange: 94. Several drinks had expired dates. Dates were needed on products iside coolers and freezers. Handwashing signs were needed at handwashing station.

Walgreen’s, 1305 North Main Street in Vidor: 95. Inspector pulled expired foods from shelves. Shelves under milk needed to be cleaned. Current health inspection report was not posted in front.

Subway-Pilot Travel Center, 2205 Highway 62 in Orange: 97. Walk-in freezer had ice build-up. Walls and ceilings at the sandwich prep area needed to be cleaned.

Mauriceville School Kitchen, 19952 FM 1130 in Mauriceville: 98. Bottom of reach-in cooler was holding water and freezing on the bottom shelf.

Pizza Hut, 1152 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 98. Outisde of storage equipment, vents at Vent-a-Hood, floors, walls an air returns needed to be cleaned.

Lighthouse Academy, 19400 Highway 62 in Orange: 99. Vents at Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned of black mold.

Panthers Den Preschool, 5970 White Oak Road in Mauriceville: 99. Several gnats were under sinks.

New Begininz (sic) Academy, 3807 Meeks Drive in Orange: 99. Employee food and drinks stored improperly inside reach-in cooler.
