Old-fashioned style street lights with hanging baskets of flowers or flag-style banners might be in the future for 16th Street.
But first, the city needs a plan for what will be done to clean and beautify the thoroughfare.
Some 40 people attended a workshop Tuesday evening to exchange ideas about improvements on the street, which is the main business thoroughfare into the city from Interstate 10.
Interim City Manager Kelvin Knauf showed photos from different towns that had landscaping and sidewalks outside businesses. People in the audience liked the light poles with either plants or banners. The banners could promote activities in town.
City Councilor Brad Childs, who owns a business on 16th Street, said travelers coming off the interstate have a quick look at the entrance to decide whether they want to stop here and spend money. The town needs to attract those visitors.
The city council has allocated $200,000 from a bond sale to be used on 16th Street projects. The light poles could be purchased with the money. One suggestion was to put the light poles only on corners.
However, 16th Street is part of State Highway 87 and any changes will need to be approved by the Texas Department of Transportation.
