Recycling at the Orange County Landfill will cease to be done at the end of July.  County Road and Bridge Engineer Clark Slacum oversees the operations at the landfill and confirmed the end of recycling in the county.

Slacum said Republic Services is contracted by the county to handle all the debris brought by citizens to the landfill.  Republic has been taking the recyclable items to a central recycling center owned by Waste Management in Beaumont.

According to Slacum the price Waste Management is receiving for items being recycled has dropped so low that it is not worth them accepting the items.  Waste Management is shutting down their recycling center in Beaumont at the end of July causing a domino effect.

The county will cease accepting recyclable items at the landfill.  Municipalities like Bridge City and Beaumont have already announced having to cease their recycle programs at the of this month.  Slacum indicated Republic Services is looking for an alternative location for taking the items, but they have not had good results so far.
