A new member on the City Council in Bridge City is a familiar face. Mike Reed was appointed Wednesday to fill the vacant Place 2 on the council.
Reed spent ten years on the council previously. He is looking forward to serving Bridge City again especially with budget time fast approaching. Reed stated, “I’ll do everything I can to try make the city keep running as smooth as it is.”
Experience working with the budget is one reason Councilwoman Lucy Fields nominated Reed for the position. Fields said it will be advantageous to have someone with Reed’s experience on the council at this time.
The City Council met in a closed session to discuss possible nominees before making any nominations in open session. The council voted on two different nominations made by its members.
Councilwoman Tammi Fisette nominated Bridge City businessman Darrin Bigler for the position first. Bigler expressed his desire to serve on the council and told Councilman Carl Harbert he would consider running for the position even if he were not appointed.
The council was split 3 to 3 in appointing Bigler. Fields then made her nomination of Reed which was approved by the City Council.
The City of Bridge City said thank you and farewell, but not good-bye to longtime members of the City Council. A reception was held Wednesday to honor Kirk Roccaforte and Eric Andrus.
Both Roccaforte and Andrus resigned from the council this month. Roccaforte was appointed County Commissioner, and Andrus has moved to a new home just outside the city limits.
Roccaforte served 25 years as an alderman and mayor of Bridge City before accepting the position of Commissioner for Precinct 3. “I’m going to miss being here as much as I have been, but I’m not going to be gone that much either I’ll be just a phone call away,” Roccaforte informed.
Andrus was equally glad to have served his city for a decade. “I did grow up on council, it was kind of a big curve ball that life threw at me that hit me straight in the face, but it’s okay my nose is a little crooked from it, but it will be okay,” Andrus joked.
Reed was appointed to replace Roccaforte. Danny Harrington was named previously to take Andrus’ place on the City Council.
