The City of Pinehurst has a new mayor. Dan Mohon was unanimously appointed Tuesday by the City Council to serve as the mayor of Pinehurst until the next municipal election in May of 2020.
Longtime mayor Pete Runnels submitted his letter of retirement last month for health reasons. The letter of retirement from Runnels was officially accepted Tuesday night by the council.
Mohon previously lived in Orange and served as the mayor of that city also. He is now proud to be the mayor of Pinehurst. Mohon said, “Pinehurst maybe a small city, but we try to make it the best we can. I feel honored the council appointed me, and I look forward to serving and to continue to make Pinehurst have a quality of life for its citizens.”
Mohon indicated he probably would run for a full-term as mayor in May. Plans to honor Runnels are still in the works to recognize his decades of service as the mayor of Pinehurst and before that as the County Judge of Orange County.
The City Council approved a revised resolution renewing the line of credit with First Financial Bank. The line of credit will by five percent which is a slight improvement on the previous line of credit.
Another resolution was approved re-establishing a flexible benefits plan for the city’s insurance to cover its employees. The cafeteria plan will give the best benefits for the employees and will be for the 2019-2020 insurance plan year.
Code Enforcement Officer Harry Vine recommended approval for an application by Monica Copeland to place a manufactured home at 3524 Mockingbird Street. The council unanimously approved Vine’s recommendation.
The date of the annual Senior Citizens Picnic in Pinehurst will change next year. City Administrator Robbie Hood commented that the hot temperatures of early September have caused the attendance to dwindle in recent years. Hood suggested holding the picnic the second weekend in November when the weather is cooler. The council agreed to the change in dates for next year.
This year’s Fall Festival will be held Saturday, October 26 at West Park on Park Avenue in Pinehurst. The Kingdom Zoo based in Pinehurst will have wildlife encounters available for the children.
Those attending the festival will be able to interact with a tortoise, exotic birds, and even a black tailed prairie dog. There will be games and candy for the children who are encouraged to come to the festival in costume. The Fall Festival will be held between 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
