Puppies Left Abandoned

The City of Pinehurst opened the first dog park in the county this month called “Pawhurst” on Park Avenue.  This week the city showed again their love for man’s best friend.  Seven puppies were left abandoned in a cage on the side of the road in Pinehurst and the city saved the dogs.

Public Works Director John Toney told how a lady was walking her dog near the Pinehurst City Hall on Wednesday when she knocked on the back door at about 5:45 AM.  City Administrator Robbie Hood met the lady, and she informed Hood she saw dogs abandoned in a cage around 33rd Street and Pheasant Street.

Hood got a Pinehurst police officer to pick up the cage and brought them to the O & M building.  As the public works director Toney handles the city’s animal shelter and was contacted.

Toney then contacted a volunteer Traci James who has worked with the animal shelter for nine years.  James called the Beaumont Humane Society which was gracious enough to take them.  “They’re being well taken care of right now and will be adopted out to good homes,” Toney indicated.

Greg May the fleet service manager for Pinehurst helped care for the little dogs before they were transported to Beaumont.  May said it is hard to understand someone who would abandon seven cute little puppies.  “They needed a home they were in pretty bad shape.  They’re really better off now than they were, it’s a shame people do this, it’s not good,” May commented.

Interested persons can go to the Beaumont Humane Society’s webpage to see the dogs and to request an adoption of one or more of them.  Toney reminded that anyone found abandoning dogs or mistreating pets in Pinehurst will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
