OC Restaurant Reports

Orange County Health Inspector James Scales closed Orange businesses serving food this month. The Best Price Motel, 2610 Lutcher Drive, did not have a food service permit to serve breakfast. The other closing was Kajun Seafood and Wings, 1102 West Park Avenue in Orange. He reported the closing was because of construction and sanitary conditions. The restaurant was closed the afternoon of February 3 and then reopened the afternoon of February 7.

Scales went to 34 food service businesses from January 14 through February 14. Eleven, mostly schools, received perfect scores. The lowest score was an 83 to Denny’s off Interstate 10 at Highway 62 in Orange.

The perfect scores went to Orangefield Junior High, Vidor Junior High, Little Cypress Junior High, West Orange Elementary, Little Cypress Intermediate, North Early Learning Center, West Orange-Stark High, Vidor Elementary.

Businesses earning perfect scores were the Garden District on Highway 87 North in Little Cypress, and Circle K Kiddie Ranch on Highway 62 South.

Scales also made six pre-opening inspections with no scores given.

Scores and demerits for the period are:

Denny’s, 7112 Interstate 10 in Orange: 83. Shelled eggs were not at proper temperatures. Raw meat was stored improperly above foods inside the reach-in cooler. Sanitizer buckes were on top of the prep table. Foods were inside broken coolers. Lots of water was on bottom of shelf with foods stored. Wiping clothes were stored on top of prep table. Vent-a-Hood storage shelves and equipment needed to be cleaned. Light shield needed over dishwashing room. Floors and walls throughout store needed to be cleaned of old foods and dirt.

Seafood Shack, 715 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 84. Foods inside coolers and freezers needed to be dated. Employee wearing gloves picked up ice cube off floor and kept preparing raw foods for service without changing glove. Non-food grade chemicals were used for pest control. Wiping cloths were stored on top of prep table. Foods were defrosting improperly inside the sink. Outside of equipment, along with vents at Vent-a-Hood, floors, area behind grill, air returns, and light shields needed to be cleaned. Handwashing signs were needed.

City Mart, 2379 West Roundbunch Road in Bridge City: 85. Inspector found cooked foods on prep table. Foods inside coolers and freezers needed to be covered and dated. Mold was inside ice machine and on drink dispensers. Dispensers were cleaned immediately. Handwashing station needed soap and paper towels. Foods were stored on the floor inside both walk-in coolers. Meats were defrosting improperly inside the three-compartment sink in water.

La Palma Food Truck, 1912 16th Street in Orange: 86. Cut onions were not at proper temperatures. Proper handwashing was not being observed and inspector found no running water inside faucets inside the mobile unit. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers. Wiping cloths were on prep table. Inspector forced immediate plumbing repairs.

Subway, 300 North Main Street in Vidor: 90. Monld was on drink dispensers. Cleaned immediately. Food handler certificates were needed. Door to walk-in cooler did not close properly. Employee was wearing improper jewelry. Employee rrestroom needed paper towels. Air gap was needed under the three compartment sink and floor drain.

Donut Nation, 18394 Highway 62 South in Mauriceville: 90. Sausage and boudain were not at proper temperatures. No record of time was kept on holding sausage and boudain at room temperature. Slight mold was inside ice machine. Same pan liner was used multiple times to bake kolaches.

Waffle House, 4212 27th Street in Orange: 90. Mold was inside ice machine. Walk-in cooler door had a damaged gasket. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers. Wiping cloths were improperly stored (need to be inside sanitizer). Reach-in coolers needed to be cleaned of old foods. Handwashing signs were needed.

Chili’s Grill and Bar, 292 Strickland Drive in Pinehurst: 90. Cooked noodles were stored on top of prep table and were not at proper temperature. Several dishes that had been cleaned still had old foods on them. Slight mold was inside ice machine. Employee drinks and personal items were not stored properly. Vents at Vent-a-Hood and outside of equipment needed to be cleaned. Floors, especially behind equipment, needed to be cleaned. Current food service permit and certified food manager certificates were not posted in the front.

Tacos Don Guicho Su Familia, 2309 MacArthur Drive: 91. Cut onions were not at proper temperatures. Raw meants were stored above produce inside reach-in cooler. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers. Area around grill and fryer needed to be cleaned.

Raceway, 500 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 91. Slight mold was inside ice machine. Hot water was at 107.8 degrees instead of 118 degrees required for dishwashing and cleaning. Dates were needed on products inside coolers. Shelves and equipment in the deli department needed to be cleaned. Handwashing signs were needed.

Real Southern Cooking, 1111 Green Avenue in Orange: 93. Foods were cooling improperly on top of counter. Chemicals were stored above dry goods. Vents at Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned.

Redeemed Coffee Shop, 1212 North Main Street in Vidor: 94. Sausage and shelled eggs were not at proper temperatures. Wiping cloths were stored on top of prep table. Outside of storage cabinets needed to be cleaned. Back storage area needed to be cleaned and organized.

Dairy Queen, 1780 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 97. Grease from the flat-top grill was dripping onto equipment and floors. That violation was reported during the previous inspection. Equipment and floors near the flat-top grill needed to be cleaned of old grease.
