Orange County Sheriff Keith Merritt said detective sergeant Chad Hogan resigned Thursday after federal investigators came to the sheriff’s office and revealed an investigation against Hogan. “My understanding is it has something to do with fraud through HUD,” Merritt said.
Hogan is a long-time law enforcement officer and was serving as the public information officer for the sheriff’s office.
Merritt said he was surprised when federal agents “showed up at my office” and informed him they had an active case against a deputy. The sheriff said the agents talked to him briefly before asking to speak with Hogan. “They really didn’t go into details with me,” Merritt said.
The agents took Hogan into a room and talked with him a long time, Merritt said. Hogan is cooperating with the investigation and took the agents to his house, the sheriff said.
Later at the sheriff’s office Hogan handed Merritt his resignation.
“We’re still in shock,” Merritt said.
