An Orange County couple is in trouble in Jasper County after the sheriff’s department says they were involved in the theft of copper in the far southern portion of the county, and then fled from deputies.
KJAS reports that according to Lieutenant Matt Ortego, this all began a few weeks ago when deputies began investigating reports of the theft of copper and other metals from multiple sites along County Road 792, near Farm to Market Road 2246, in the Evadale area. Ortego said the thieves were hitting small businesses, well sites, and residences.
Ortego said the department greatly stepped up its presence in that area, and it all ended on Tuesday morning when they received a report of a suspicious vehicle at a well site with a white male and a white female who matched the description of their suspects. Ortego said deputies were already in the area and arrived quickly, but the male suspect fled in a silver SUV.
According to Ortego, the man stopped and then fled on foot into a wooded area, but he was quickly apprehended by Lieutenant Ryan Cunningham, along with the female suspect.
Lieutenant Ortego has identified the pair as Billy Wayne LeBouef, 37, and Ashley Posey, 25, both of Orange.
As of Thursday, Jasper County jailers said that neither had been arraigned yet, but they were both still being held on preliminary charges of criminal trespass and displaying fictitious license plates.
