Orange County Health Inspector James Scales Monday shut down the Wendy’s on Edgar Brown Drive because the restaurant had no hot water. The store reopened on Tuesday after replacing the water heater.
Scales went to 22 food businesses, restaurants and cafeterias during the last part of November. Ten of them, mostly schools, received perfect scores. The lowest was an 88 for the Cypress Plaza convenience store at 1610 W. Park Avenue in Orange.
The perfect scores were for Bridge City Elementary, Orangefield Junior High, Vidor Elementary, Vidor Junior High, North Early Learning Center in the West Orange-Cove district, Bridge City Middle, Little Cypress Intermediate, Tekoa Academy in Orange and Little Flock Daycare in Little Cypress.
Scales also made a pre-opening inspection for Cleven’s Southern Cookin’ in Mauriceville and noted the restaurant opened without obtaining a food service permit through the county health department. He also made a pre-opening inspection for the Texas Avenue Tavern in Bridge City because the business is moving to a new location.

Healthy Ways Care, 160 Vernon Street in Vidor: 99. Dry wall was missing in back storage area.
Walmart Grocery, 3115 Edgar Brown Drive in West Orange: 97. Walk-in freezer had ice build-up on motors and doors. Employee drinks did not have lids and straws.
Walmart Bakery, 3115 Edgar Brown Drive in West Orange: 96. Freezer door was iced over and not closing completely. Light shield above prep table needed to be repaired. Floor grout was missing. Floors inside the walk-in cooler/freezer needed to be cleaned.
Chef Leo’s China Bistro, 345 North Main Street in Vidor: 96. Dates were needed on products inside coolers. Employee drinks did not have lids and straws. Floor tiles were missing or damaged. Back storage room needed to be cleaned and organized.
Little Caesar’s Pizza, 715 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 96. Faucet was damaged on hand-washing station. Oven, floors and walls needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Exxon Food Mart, 6892 FM 1130 in Orange: 96. Dates needed on products inside reach-in coolers. Drinks were stored on floor inside walk-in cooler. Wall at ice machine needed to be cleaned and repaired.
Dollar General, 5725 16th Street in Orange: 94. Inspector found several dented cans and pulled several expired foods from shelves. Inside of milk cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods. Dumpster area needed to be cleaned of trash on ground. Sales floor and back storage area needed to be cleaned and organized. Inspector planned to return in a week to check progress.
Subway, 3030 Highway 12 in Vidor: 93. Meats were stored above vegetables inside reach-in cooler. Hand-washing station did not have hot water. Employee drinks were improperly stored inside reach-in cooler. Inside of reach-in cooler/freezer needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Cypress Plaza, 1610 West Park Avenue in Orange: 88. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Ceiling tiles were stored above drinks inside walk-in cooler. Gaskets needed to be replaced. Drinks were stored on floor inside walk-in cooler. Storage shelves, cabinets, floors and walls throughout store needed to be cleaned of old foods and dirt. Light shields were needed throughout the store. Business needed to be cleaned, organized and trash thrown away. Inspector gave the management five days to clean and organize the entire store.
