Pinehurst police Tuesday night arrested a man for burglary of a building inside the U-Rent All on Strickland Drive. He had a pistol in a case on the side of his pants, police report. Officers also found a case in his pocket with methamphetamine and a glass pipe used to smoke the drug.

Orange Police Detective Captain Robert Enmon said the man is a “person of interest” in connection with a weekend break-in at The Hut barbecue business on 16th Street. Cash was stolen. Numerous people called police about the suspect after a surveillance video of him was posted on kogt.com.

33-year-old Michael Allen Anderson, who was listed as “homeless,” has been charged with burglary of a building, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a firearm. Justice of the Peace David Peck set a bond of $11,000. Pinehurst Police Chief Fred Hanauer said Anderson also has an arrest warrant issued for a parole violation. Bond is not set for parole violations.

In an affidavit of probable cause, Pinehurst Officer Leonard Roff said an alarm sounded about 10 p.m. Tuesday at the U-Rent All, 1628 Strickland Drive. The owner arrived and unlocked the gate and front door to the building.

Officer Roff, along with West Orange Police Officer John Brown, checked inside. Someone had rummaged through the office. Officer Brown found a man lying on the floor partly covered in cardboard boxes.

Officer Roff said Officer Brown had his service pistol pointed at the man and was ordering him to show his hands. As Roff grabbed the man’s left hand, the man started to reach to his front waist with his right hand. The officer grabbed the right hand. After getting the man, the officer saw a .9mm pistol in a phone case clipped to the right side of the man’s waist.

Police also found an eyeglasses case inside the man’s pocket. The case had four baggies of methamphetamine and the glass pipe.  The man was then taken to the Orange County Jail.

Chief Hanauer said Anderson also had three misdemeanor arrest warrants issued against him from the city of Orange.
