Seven persons submitted resumes to serve as the next Justice of the Peace in Precinct 1 by Monday’s deadline. One was eliminated because the person did not meet the requirement according to the Texas Attorney General’s office of living in the precinct for at least six months prior to being appointed.
Two of the applicants voiced their desire to serve as Justice of the Peace at last week’s Commissioners Court meeting. Gail Barnett ran against the retiring David Peck for the Justice of the Peace of Precinct 1 in 2014, and said she held similar positions in Mississippi. Barnett wanted to let the Commissioners beware of her interest in the position.
Also expressing interest in the Justice of the Peace appointment is Cimarron Campbell who was the first Republican to be elected to public office in Orange County. Campbell was elected previously as Justice of the Peace in Precinct 2. He wanted the Court to know he was available.
The Commissioners Court is expected to deliberate Tuesday the six qualified applicants in a closed session before appointing in open session the new Justice of the Peace for Precinct 1. The appointee will take office January 4, 2017 to replace Judge Peck who is retiring January 3.
