Months ago the Commissioners Court approved a resolution opposing the fleeting of barges on the Neches River in the Bessie Heights Marsh. Since then there have been public meetings by groups both supporting the barges and opposing them being used in the marsh area.
This week a group of supporters for the fleeting of barges by Savage Inland Marine in the Bessie Heights Marsh spoke to the Commissioners Court. Jennie Scalfano with the Odom Interests said she represents the Brown, Donner, and Odom families who own property on the Neches River.
Scalfano indicated she has talked with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department about the fleeting of barges in the marsh. Scalfano stated that the state has spent approximately $20 million on restoring the Bessie Heights Marsh and told her they had no concerns with the operations by Savage Inland Marine damaging the marsh now or in the future.
Other persons speaking in support of the Utah based Savage Inland Marine included attorneys and boat captains. They informed that 80 high salary jobs would be created by the fleeting of barges there on the Neches River. They also spoke to the negative impact for future business ventures coming to Orange County if the barges were forced out.
The next Commissioners Court meeting will be January 3. Scalfano promised to be back next month to try to reverse the earlier resolution passed by the Commissioners on June 14 opposing the fleeting of barges in the Bessie Heights Marsh. Scalfano said she would bring more evidence and witnesses to support the matter.
