Retired Sergeant Sarah Jefferson-Simon was laid to rest Saturday at Magnolia Gardens Cemetery with a police honor guard. Jefferson-Simon served 25 years with the Orange Police Department. She was currently a member of the West Orange-Cove school district. She died last week at a Houston hospital at the age of 55. Police Chief Lane Martin presented her daughter, Diztorsha Jefferson Lavan with a framed American flag. The honor guard gave a 21-gun salute and Lieutenant Eric Ellison, wearing traditional kilts, played ‘Amazing Grace’ on bagpipes. Jefferson-Simon’s son-in-law Ray Lavan, a musician and school band director, played ‘Taps’ on the trumpet.
