Health Inspection Scores

New state health rules for businesses dealing with food include requiring the businesses to post their latest county health inspection and have a first aid kit. In the first part of January, Orange County Health Inspector James Scales gave demerits to stores or restaurants without the postings or the kits.

Scales went to 33 businesses in December and the first part of January. Six of the businesses had perfect scores and three of them were day care centers. Several businesses were close to perfect, earning 99 or 98 scores.

The lowest score was for Pine Forest Fuel with a 76 for numerous violations, including food found at unsafe temperatures and live worms stored about premade meat.

Scales closed the Sun Wok restaurant on Texas Avenue in Bridge City because it did not have hot water. The restaurant was allowed to open when the hot water issues were corrected.

The perfect scores went to Simply Sweet Treats on Ben Mac Road in Orange,  Fastlane on West Railroad Street in Vidor, Subway on MLK Drive in Pinehurst, Circle K Kiddie Ranch on Highway 62 in Orange, Apple Tree Child Enrichment on FM 105 in Orangefield, and Kids Castle on Parkside Place in Bridge City.

Karyn’s Bakery, 605 West Roundbunch Road in Bridge City had a pre-opening inspection with no score.

Other scores and demerits were:

Smoke Hope, 585 North Main Street in Vidor: 99. Back storage rooms needed to be cleaned and organized. Bottom of back door needed to be sealed.

Walgreen’s, 1790 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 99. Doors inside walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned of old trash.

Burger King, 605 North Main Street in Vidor: 98. Restrooms did not have hot water.

Main Street Seafood, 933 North Main Street in Vidor: 98. Store did not have certificates for food handlers and food managers posted.

CVS Pharmacy, 2425 North 16th Street in Orange: 98. Shelves inside milk cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods. Latest health inspection report was not posted. Toilet lid in men’s restroom was broken.

Dollar General, 1752 Highway 12 in Vidor: 98. Shelves inside milk cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods. Latest health inspection report was not posted.

Cypress Plaza, 7014 North Highway 87: 97. Drinks were stored on the floor. Mold was on a wall in back storage room next to walk-in cooler. Latest health inspection report was not posted.

Valero Corner Store, 1010 North Main Street in Vidor: 97. The faucet a three-compartment sink was dripping at the base.

Pappa John’s Pizza, 2305 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 97. One employee did not have food handler certificate. Employee was wearing improver jewelry.

Country Corner, 1810 South Main Street in Vidor: 97. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves.

The Shrimp Boat, 18606 Highway 62 South in Orange: 96.  No certified food manager on staff. Dates were needed on products inside the reach-in freezers.

Taco Bell, 835 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 96. Hand-washing station and restrooms did not have hot water. Storage shelves were rusted, dirty and needed to be organized. Current food service permit, current health inspection reports and all certified food manager certificates were not posted in front of restaurant.

Pizza Hut, 1152 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 96. Chicken was stored above cheese inside walk-in cooler. Vent-a-Hood and top of oven needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease.

Family Dollar, 1540 Strickland Drive in Orange: 96. Inspector found several dented cans and pulled several expired foods from shelves. Shelves inside milk cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods.

Dairy Queen, 11785 North Highway 62 in Mauriceville: 96. Toaster needed to be cleaned of old foods. Hand-washing sings were not posted at the back hand-washing station. Latest health inspection report was not posted in front of the restaurant.

Dollar Tree, 170 Strickland Drive in Pinehurst: 95. Inspector pulled several expired foods from reach-in coolers and several dented cans from shelves. The back door-dumpster area needed to be cleaned of old trash and equipment. Current food service permit and latest health inspection report were not posted.

Romano’s 8:31 Italian, 10383 Highway 12 in Mauriceville: 94. Hand-washing station did not have hot water. Front cooler had a water drip. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers.

Big Lots, 2260 MacArthur Drive in Pinehurst: 94. Inspector pulled several expired dairy products and dry goods from shelves. He also pulled several dented cans. Stick traps in the back storage room were full of roaches and one mouse. They should be discarded and replaced. Shelves inside milk cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods. Latest health inspection report was not posted in front of the store.

Sonic Drive-In, 2210 Highway 62 in McLewis: 92.  Fry warmer and toaster needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease. Broken slushy machine was found near the drive-through and needed to be repaired or removed. Floors, walls, ceiling, outside of equipment and storage shelves needed to be cleaned of old foods. Sink and toilet in restrooms were spray-painted white and the paint was beginning to chip off. They needed to be repaired or replaced. Inspector recommended lots of cleaning and maintenance at the location. “Score does not reflect condition of this location,” he reported.

Super Stop, 2590 North Main Street in Vidor: 92. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Employee restroom had plumbing problems and needed to be immediately repaired. Storage shelves needed to be cleaned. Latest health inspection report was not posted.

Get-N-Go, 1150 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 92.  Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Restroom did not have hot water. Ice scoop was broken. Latest health inspection report was not posted. CO-2 tanks needed to be secured.

Kwick Stop, 3110 16th Street in Orange: 91. Mold was on slushy machines. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Dates were needed on foods inside coolers. Drinks were stored on floor inside walk-in cooler. Latest health inspection report was not posted.

Novrozsky’s, 1035 North Main Street in Vidor: 89. Ice scoop was on top of ice machine. Bottles of chemicals were stored on top of buckets of spices. Water was sitting on the bottom of the reach-in cooler and inside walk-in cooler. Storage shelves, floors, walls, ceilings and air vents throughout restaurant needed to be cleaned of old foods and dust.

Texas Food Store, 305 Burton Avenue in Orange: 86. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Bags of ice had defrosted and then frozen again inside the reach-in freezer. Inspector recommended defrosting and cleaning freezer. Mold was on slushy machines. Ice scoop was on top of ice machine. Paper towels and toilet paper were needed in side employee restroom. Hole was in wall behind ice machine and needed to be repaired. Drinks were stored on floor. Latest health inspection report and latest food service permit were not posted.

Pine Forest Fuel, 4255 North Main Street in Vidor: 76. White gravy was inside a non-working cooler. Sausage was at improper temperature inside a food warmer that was turned off. Live worms were stored above premade meat. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Dishes were inside hand sink. Areas at coolers and walls needed to be sealed. Drinks were stored on the floor in cooler. Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned. Towels and toilet paper were needed in restrooms.  Food service permit and health inspection report not posted. Store did not have first aid kit. Trash was on an empty lot.
