The City Council in Pinehurst approved a rerate agreement with the Texas Municipal League (TML) Tuesday evening. Liz McKee with TK Health Insurance gave a presentation about insurance coverage for Pinehurst city employees. McKee said the city will see a 15 percent increase in health insurance from TML, but compared to other insurance coverage’s which are increasing by more than 30 percent it is not too bad.
City Secretary Debbie Cormier stated that except for sales tax revenues which are slightly down from last year Pinehurst is doing well as far as revenues. City Administrator Robbie Hood is confident the sales tax figures will be on the rise in the coming months with the reopening of the Wienerschnitzel Restaurant and because of the work done by Code Enforcement Officer Harry Vine.
Hood said the tax revenues have already seen a substantial jump since the Wienerschnitzel opened again in June, and added that Vine worked with the state comptroller’s office to find businesses in Pinehurst that were paying their sales tax receipts to either Orange or West Orange because they have the same zip code as Pinehurst. “We keep a very close eye on our sales tax to make sure we’re getting allocated the proper amount of money that is due to the city of Pinehurst,” Hood concluded.
During Vine’s monthly report to the City Council, he informed the aldermen that the MacArthur Shopping Center located behind the Wienerschnitzel will be demolished soon. There are no businesses in the shopping center currently. The contractor is removing loose debris in the structure now before an asbestos abatement is done on it. Vine indicated, “It is my understanding that the whole shopping center will be coming down.” A new HEB signature store will be built at that location.
The City Council tabled awarding a new contract for auditing services for the city. Hood and Cormier requested additional time to review the four bids submitted to perform this fiscal year’s audit for Pinehurst. Hood said he was confident the contract would be awarded at the City Council meeting in August.
During the meeting, the members of the City Council received a certificate from the General Land Office for the City Council’s successful handling of a grant that was used in the Hurricane Ike Community Development and Revitalization Program. Also recognized were the members of the Pinehurst Volunteer Fire Department. The VFW Post 2775 and Auxiliary presented a certificate of appreciation to the fire fighters for their selfless efforts to protect the area’s citizens and their property.
