A large audience attended the City Council meeting in Bridge City Tuesday evening. Most were there to see Bill Dixon, Jr given his oath of office as the new Municipal Judge for Bridge City.
Afterwards Dixon was a little choked up talking about taking over the position held by his friend the late James Scales. He said he was very humbled to be considered for the position, and Scales had left some big shoes to fill. “I appreciate it, and I just promise to do the best I can,” Dixon pledged. Dixon will finish out the remainder of Scales’ two-year term as judge when he can be reappointed to the position. Dixon worked over 30 years as a teacher in the Bridge City School District.
The Bridge City Fire Department made a special presentation Tuesday to Larry Scott with Bridge City Wrecker for his outstanding action during a fire back in June. Department spokesman Robert Hanks said the fire department was dispatched to a vehicle fire on June 1 that threatened to spread to a nearby home. Hanks informed that Scott had heard the call of the fire on his radio scanner and drove his wrecker to the scene. Once there he attached the wrecker to the burning truck and towed it away from the structure until the fire department personnel arrived to extinguish the fire.
Hanks praised Scott for his quick and courageous efforts to help a neighbor. “Had it not been for the actions of Mr. Scott there would no doubt have been significant fire damage to the residence.” Scott was given a proclamation for his quick and courageous actions as well as a round of applause from those attending the City Council meeting.
The Council approved the proposed tax rate for next year as 52 cents per 100 dollars value. The proposed rate represents no change from this year’s tax rate in Bridge City. The City Council also called for two public hearings on the tax rate and the budget for next year. The hearings will be August 15 and September 5. Both public hearings will be held in the City Hall and will start at 6:00 PM.
