On the heels of the Texas Travel Commission giving their approval of the proposed 299 Loop around Vidor, Mayor Robert Viator (right) has announced he’s running for County Commissioner.  “I have announced my filing to form a campaign committee. Actual filing to be on the Precinct 4 commissioners ballot can not happen until Nov 11. The primary election will happen in the spring of 2018 with the general election taking place later that year in the fall.  First and foremost, to the citizens of Vidor. I will be your Mayor through Jan 1st 2019 at the very minimum. I will continue to serve and represent all of you just as I have done during the past and will continue to look for ways to benefit us all as we move into the future… Pride and Progress.”

Viator has been a vocal leader against the proposed loop while current Precinct 4 Commissioner Jody Crump has been a proponent, including testifying in front of the commission in Austin.  “It’s just a matter of getting down to what the financing shows and whether it’s feasible to do for Orange County or not,” Crump said on Tuesday.  Crump has also announced his intentions to run for re-election.

County Judge Brint Carlton, who says he’s currently neutral on the loop, said Tuesday, “What I would like to do is hold a couple of public meetings on it to get input from everybody that are either against it or for it, and they can come and have the final numbers what the cost will be and to talk about it.” Any decision on Orange County supporting the Loop 299 project will be made eventually by the Commissioners Court.  Even though there will probably be public hearings on the loop project, there will not be a vote of the citizens in the county to determine the future of it.
