A state operated tent shelter opened Monday in Orange. The shelter located at the Boat Launch in Orange will have the capacity to house up to 250 evacuees from Orange County as a result of Tropical Storm Harvey.
The shelter’s commander Kevin Dinnin with the Emergency Management Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety said the shelter will remain here as long as there is a need to house evacuees from Orange County. The first 100 or so evacuees were expected to be bused back to Orange Monday from initial sheltering in the Dallas area.
Dinnin indicated the evacuees will be booked in upon arrival and given colored identification bracelets before being assigned a sleeping cot in the large tent which is divided into sleeping areas for males only, females only, families, and a dining area. Another tent is on site for medical needs and a command center is available in a separate portable building.
County Judge Brint Carlton thanked Orange Mayor Jimmy Sims for his help in finding the Boat Launch as the location for the Tent Shelter. Carlton added it was a joint effort of county and all the municipalities in the county to find an appropriate location for the shelter.
