During routine business setting the pay for Orange  Municipal Court Judge Jerry Pennington, members of the Orange City Council said they want to get applications for the position next year.

Judge Pennington has held the appointed seat for more than 25 years.

District 4 Councilor Annette Pernell said the position should be open for other attorneys instead of automatically renewing Pennington’s contract.

District 3 Councilor Terrie Salter agreed that other people should be able to apply.

However, City Attorney Jack Smith said he doubts any other local attorney will apply because of their respect for Pennington.

After Councilors Bill Mello and Larry Spears said they would agree to getting more people to apply, City Manager Dr. Shawn Oubre said the process to get people to apply should begin in January.

The positions open will also include the municipal court prosecutor long held by Cimron Campbell, and alternate city judge George Barron.
