A wood-frame cottage in the Old Orange Historic District still has a future. The Orange Historic Preservation Commission Monday delayed any action on giving permission to demolish the house because the owner did not appear at the meeting.

Owner Chrisleigh Dal Sasso asked to demolish the house at 1001 Orange Avenue. The commission must approve any demolitions within the designated historic district.

Three commission members and three members of the Orange City Council attended the meeting. None of them want the house to be torn down. They talked about whether a buyer can be found to restore the house. The house did not flood during Tropical Storm Harvey.

Councilor Pat Pullen said it has a good roof and walls.

Planning Director Kelvin Knauf said Dal Sasso reported termites and damage inside. The commission wanted to see photographs of the interior. Knauf also said the son of a former tenant had been breaking into the house and sleeping.

The discussion included the possibility of adding another vacant lot to the historic district and whether weeds would grow. If the house is torn down, the land owner is responsible for maintenance. Commissioner Suzanne Perry questioned whether a land owner who did not maintain the building would keep the lot clean.
