The City Council in Bridge City will vote on the proposed tax rate and the budget for next fiscal year in two weeks.  Tuesday the council held its second public hearing on the proposed tax rate which includes a three-cent increase.  The tax rate is being raised to 54.7 cents per 100 dollars value.  There were no citizens at the hearing to comment.  The next City Council meeting will be September 18 when the tax rate and the budget will be approved.

During the City Council meeting that followed the hearing, LJA Engineering was approved as the engineering firm for a 2019-2020 Texas Community Development Block Grant.  A committee reviewed the applications of firms and recommended LJA Engineering to the council.

The council appointed David Gauthier as a replacement for Robert Simonton on the Planning and Zoning Commission.  Simonton has resigned from the P&Z because he and his wife are moving out of the city limits of Bridge City.

A request by a citizen to have his property disannexed from the city was tabled.  Alderman Kirk Roccaforte explained the reason for tabling the request was to allow City Attorney Paul Fukuda to determine the legalities of the disannexation.  Fukuda has contacted the Texas Municipal League for information about the disannexation of property and has not got an answer yet according to Roccaforte.

Joining the mayor and council on the dais for the first time was Jason Withers as the Student Council Representative.  Withers was appointed by a faculty member at Bridge City High School.  Withers serves on the student council there.  He exclaimed his excitement of being able to be part of the city government in his hometown.
