An Orange patrol officer Wednesday afternoon saved a man with mental problems from being run over on Interstate 10. Police had a 911 call at 3 p.m. because a man was lying in the middle of the interstate westbound lanes near Womack Road.

Officer M.C. Bernard reported he drove to the scene and got out. The man walked to the guard rail separating him from the officer, but would not get to safety. He “seemed to be in a state of panic and paranoia,” the officer wrote.

Bernard helped the man over the guardrail to a safe location. Acadian Ambulance took the man to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont for an emergency commitment.

A drunk man Wednesday evening begged to go to jail and wanted to go so much he asked police to wait while he put on clothes.

Orange police went to a house in the 1000 block of DuPont Drive at 6:15 p.m. because of a reported verbal disturbance. The officer reported a man inside the house smelled like alcohol and had slurred speech.

No one at the residence wanted to pursue a charge, so the officer told the drunk man to go to his room. But the man begged to be arrested. The officer told him it is not illegal to be intoxicated inside your own house. So the man asked the officer to wait while he changed clothes.

The man changed clothes. The officer reported the man then “stumbled his way onto the roadway.” He was then drunk in public.

William Fritz Lorenz was arrested for the Class C misdemeanor of public intoxication and was taken to the Orange County Jail.
