The tax exemptions for tax year 2019 were approved Tuesday by the West Orange City Council. There were no changes in any of three exemptions. The Homestead exemption remains 20 percent of the properties appraised value. The exemptions for Senior Citizens age 65 and older and for disabled citizens will continue to be $17,000.
The City Council approved a resolution authorizing the submittal of an Economic Development Administration Disaster Assistance application. Melinda Smith with Traylor & Associates will handle the submittal of the grant application for West Orange. The deadline for submitting the grant application in May 1, 2019.
The grant is to help relocate and elevate the city’s water treatment plant next to its current location. The estimated cost will be $8.35 million. The current facility flooded during Harvey which rendered much of the equipment useless causing to backup into many residences.
The rate increase request by Entergy Texas was denied in an ordinance approved by the City Council. Public Works Director Mike Stelly was authorized to enter into an interlocal agreement with the Orange County Drainage District to assist West Orange in performing drainage work.
Two officers with the West Orange Police Department were approved to be retained as employees for the city. Chris Kite and David Vaughn have completed their 90-day transitional trial period and will be working as full-time employees now.
