The Orange City Council Tuesday will approve a contract for the new city manager that includes an annual salary of $150,000 plus a $6,000 annual vehicle allowance.
The council last month named Mike Kunst, who is currently city manager of Vidor, to take the same position in Orange. He will start the new job October 1.
The city council meets at 9 a.m. Tuesday and the agenda includes a vote on the contract with Kunst. At a previous meeting, District 1 Councilor Pat Pullen recommended going up on the monthly car allowance from $400 to $500 and that suggested rate is in the contract.
The contract also has Kunst agreeing to have a permanent residence in the city within six months.
The council will review Kunst’s performance after six months and then yearly reviews. His contract includes two weeks of vacation along with one week of executive or personal leave.
If he leaves the job, he will not be paid for unused sick leave, but will be able to get unused vacation pay.
The termination pay, which comes if the city council decides for any reason to not renew a contract, will be six months salary, along with paid COBRA health insurance for six months for him and dependents.
Previous city manager, Shawn Oubre, who held the job nearly 13 years, once had a termination clause that would pay him two years salary.
