Cove Gets Extra Patrols to Stop Daytime Burglaries
Orange police are on extra patrols in the Cove neighborhood to try to stop a string of daytime burglaries. The missing items have included TVs, video game systems, and at least one gun.
Detective Captain Robert Enmon said seven break-ins have been reported in the area within a week. More were reported during the weekend in the 100 block of Morris Street, the 100 block of Campus Street, and the 1200 block of Texas Street.
In addition, an attempted burglary was in the 600 block of DuPont Drive.
Enmon said the burglaries are taking place between 6:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. At this time, police do not know whether one or more people are involved.
He is asking for people in the neighborhood with surveillance cameras check to see if they see anything suspicious. Anyone with a surveillance recording or information on the burglaries should contact the Orange Police Department Detective Division at 883-1095.
Police, Fire Help with Tugboat Medical Emergency
Orange police and fire departments assisted Friday morning with the death of a man on a working tugboat. Captain Robert Enmon said the tugboat made an emergency call and the U.S. Coast Guard instructed the crew to call 911 for Orange. The fire department met the tugboat in a rescue boat.
The boat then brought the man ashore to the City Boat Ramp on Pier Road. Even though CPR was conducted on the man for two hours, he did not survive. Justice of the Peace Chad Jenkins pronounced the man dead at the boat ramp.
Driver Arrested after Pickup Runs Off Road into Field
A 27-year-old Nederland man was arrested for driving while intoxicated Friday morning after a pickup truck went off the westbound Interstate 10 feeder road, hit two utility poles, and went into a field.
Orange police report a man from Orange who saw the truck stopped to check on the driver and then kept him from driving off again.
Police about 9:30 a.m. Friday went to the field in an area between McCoy’s Building Supply and Womack Road. The witness told police the Nissan Titan pickup the man was driving went off the roadway into a ditch on the left side of the feeder road. The truck then got back on the roadway before going off to the right side. The truck hit two utility poles and traveled about 50 yards into the field.
The witness said the man tried to get back into the truck and drive away. Police reported the driver said he had gotten off of work and went to a bar in Louisiana.
