The City Council in Bridge City awarded the contract Tuesday to repair and paint the city’s water storage tank located on FM 408. CFG Industries was the low bidder, but their initial bid was over the amount budgeted by Bridge City for the project according to City Manager Jerry Jones. The city budgeted $246,000 for the project, but CFG bid $267,750 to do the work. Jones said they negotiated with CFG and the two parties agreed for the amount budgeted to be awarded in the contract.
Bridge City is also looking to invest some bond funds that were being saved for the flood insurance appeal. Jones explained the intent is to invest with UBS Financial Service which has a very good reputation and do some safe investments with them. Jones added that the bond money was just sitting in the bank, and now Bridge City can earn some additional interest while waiting on the final outcome of the appeal.
City Secretary Sherry Tisdale stated 640 ballots were cast early in Bridge City for Saturday’s municipal election. Early voting concluded Tuesday evening. Citizens in Bridge City will be electing a new mayor and three council members on Saturday. Current Mayor Kirk Roccaforte has reached his term limits as mayor and is running for a position on the city council in Place 2 opposed by Carl Harbert. Incumbent Eric Andrus is seeking another term in Place 4 and is opposed by Phillip Todora, Jr. Incumbent Danny Cole in Place 6 has two opponents Kevin Mott and Lucy Fields. David Rutledge is running unopposed for mayor to replace Roccaforte.
During the time for citizen comment the City Council heard from Catherine Bailey who expressed her concern about the number of rental properties moving into her neighborhood. Bailey said it was upsetting to homeowners with houses that have been re-done since Hurricane Ike to have less expensive rental property being built next to or across the street from their residences. Bailey claimed that 60 percent of the residences in Bridge City are now rental property which she believes leads to downgrading a neighborhood.
