The National Weather Service of Lake Charles has confirmed four tornadoes formed Wednesday afternoon during a severe thunderstorm. One tornado was in Newton County, another in Jasper County and two in Tyler County. All were in the EF 1 ranking on the Enhanced Fujita Scale with winds from 90 to 100 miles per hour.

On Thursday, Newton County Judge Paul Price declared his county as a disaster zone after the storm, which carried heavy rain, hail and strong straight winds. The declaration will help the county apply for state help.

The National Weather Service in Lake Charles named the tornado in Newton County as the Farrsville Tornado with winds of 110 mph. The tornado traveled 12.2 miles and was 800 yards wide. It began at 4:34 p.m. Wednesday and ended about 6 miles northwest of Burkeville.

The tornado caused numerous trees to be uprooted or snapped and at least two least houses were damaged by trees. A mobile home lost a roof.

The tornado in Jasper County was named Zion Hill Tornado with peak winds at 105 mph. The tornado traveled four-tenths of a mile and was about 25 yards wide. It started at 4:12 p.m. and caused tree damage.
